Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship has scheduled a pair of five-week, non-credit "Introduction to Shields" sailing classes during the months of February and March.
The shields class is a transition course, taking students from small boats to keel boats of 27 to 30 feet.
One section of the class meets Saturdays, Feb. 8, 22, March 1, 8 and 15, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach. A second section meets Sundays, Feb. 9, 23, March 2, 9 and 16, during the same hours.
Registration fee is $115. Visa and MasterCard holders may register by phone.
OCC's Sailing Center is located at 1801 W. Pacific Coast Highway, between the Balboa Bay Club and Orange County Sea Scout Base.
Students in the shields class will learn seamanship skills, skippering, sailing theory, docking, reefing, knots, right-of-way rules, tacking and jibing, and safe handling of a larger boat. For information about OCC's sailing classes, phone (949) 645-9412.
