OCC OFFERS BEGINNING COASTAL NAVIGATION CLASS
Thursday, December 11, 2003

A comprehensive six-week coastal navigation course for novices will be offered this winter by Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship.

The non-credit class meets Tuesday evenings, Jan. 6, 13, 27, Feb. 3, 10 and 17, from 7-10 p.m. at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach. Registration fee is $125.
Instructor Scott Smith is a retired U.S. Coast Guard commander.

The course covers charts and plotting tools. By the second week, students will be finding latitude and longitude, and determining distance and direction. Other course topics include time/speed/distance calculations, compass and compass error, bearings, and positioning. Approximately two hours of homework will be assigned each week.

It's an excellent course for persons planning a first cruise to Catalina.

OCC's Sailing Center is located at 1801 W. Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, between the Balboa Bay Club and the Orange County Sea Scout Base.

Visa and MasterCard holders may register by phone.
