Friday, December 12, 2003

A three-week non-credit keelboat class, designed for students who've been on boats but are beginning sailors, will be offered in January by Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship.

Two sections of the course are available.

Taught aboard OCC's Newport 41, the course covers terminology and rigging, basic sail theory, points of sail, man overboard retrieval, steering techniques, docking, and reefing. Students are required to have completed an intermediate shields class.

One section of the course meets Friday afternoons, Jan. 9, 16 and 23, from 1-5 p.m. at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach. The other section meets Saturday afternoons, Jan. 10, 17 and 24, from 1:45-5:30 p.m. Registration fee is $199.

OCC's Sailing Center is located at 1801 W. Pacific Coast Highway, between the Balboa Bay Club and Orange County Sea Scout Base. For information about OCC's sailing classes, phone (949) 645-9412.
