OCC'S SCHOOL OF SAILING AND SEAMANSHIP OFFERS WINTER BASIC CRUISING COURSEA "Basic Cruising" course that is the second step in the U.S. Sailing Keelboat Certification System will be offered this winter by Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship.

The six-week class meets Saturdays, Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31, Feb. 7 and 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach. Registration fee is $515.

OCC's Sailing Center is located at 1801 W. Pacific Coast Highway, between the Balboa Bay Club and Orange County Sea Scout Base.
The course is designed for persons who have completed basic keelboat certification but have little or no experience running a mid-sized auxiliary cruising boat. The course will cover boat systems, radio operation, maneuvering under power and sail, sail changes under way, reefing, crew overboard, safety at sea, heavy weather techniques, course plotting and steering by the compass.
Students who successfully complete the course, and receive a passing grade on the written exam, will receive a U.S. Sailing Basic Cruising Certification.
