A comprehensive six-week course that provides instruction in the theory, practice and procedures for navigation and piloting will be offered this winter by Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship.

The non-credit class, which offers US SAILING certification, meets Thursday evening, Jan. 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9 and 23, from 7-10 p.m. at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach. Registration fee is $190.

The course is recommended for students already working within the US SAILING Keelboat Certification system. Practical skills are strongly emphasized in the course, and students are required to complete one to two hours of homework each week. Participants will become familiar with all the tools, publications and skills required for successful coastal navigation.

The written test for US SAILING Coastal Navigation Certification will be given in class. Successful completion of the course and a passing grade on the written test are required for final certification.

OCC's Sailing Center is located at 1801 W. Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, between the Balboa Bay Club and the Orange County Sea Scout Base.

Visa and MasterCard holders may register by phone.
