SEVEN STUDENT MUSIC AND DANCE CONCERTS ON TAP THIS SPRING AT OCC
Wednesday, December 17, 2003

Seven concerts performed by Orange Coast College's Symphony Orchestra, Chorale, Wind Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, and Dance Department are on tap on campus this spring.

OCC's Symphony will offer its first spring concert on Saturday evening, March 6, at 8 p.m. in Robert B. Moore Theatre. The concert is titled "Symphonic Bernstein." The Symphony will present music from Leonard Bernstein's musical, "West Side Story." The concert will also include the overture from Bernstein's opera, "Candide."

OCC's 100-voice Chorale will join the Symphony in performing Bernstein's serene and affirmative oratorio, "Chichester Psalms." The oratorio features Hebrew text from five different Psalms.

The Symphony and Chorale are directed by OCC music professor, Dr. Ricardo Soto. A Southern California native, Soto earned his B.A. and master's degrees in music from California State University at Fullerton, and his doctorate from the University of Southern California.

Orange Coast College's Dance Department will host its 41st annual Student Dance Concert on Friday and Saturday evenings, April 23-24.

Performances are set for 8 p.m. in Robert B. Moore Theatre.

The concert, directed by OCC dance professor, Linda Sohl-Donnell, will offer a variety of dance styles including modern, jazz, tap, ballet, Middle Eastern and flamenco. Sixty advanced dance students will take part in the performances.

The concert will include choreographed works by OCC faculty members, students and guest artists. All works will be performed by students.

OCC's 45-member Wind Ensemble will offer a concert that features the music of Broadway on Sunday afternoon, May 2, in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The Wind Ensemble is under the direction of music professor, Dana Wheaton. Titled "Return to the Great White Way," curtain is set for 3 p.m.

The concert will feature Broadway favorites from the past century.

OCC's student dancers will stage their fifth annual Fiesta Latina celebration on campus on Thursday and Friday, May 6-7.

Fiesta Latina is an Orange Coast College dance and cultural heritage outreach to Orange County's elementary schools and high schools and to local adults. It's a colorful and energetic educational presentation, offering striking examples of Latin American culture, dance and music.

One-hour public performances are scheduled for Thursday evening at 7 p.m., and Friday at 10 a.m. in OCC's Moore Theatre. The performances are open to elementary and high school students, and to members of the community. Admission is free.

Artistic director of Fiesta Latina is OCC dance professor, Jose Costas, a native of Puerto Rico who spent nine years as principal dancer with Ballet Hispanico of New York.
The college's 25-member Guitar Ensemble, directed by Joseph Poshek, will offer its spring concert on Saturday, May 8, at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. The concert will include solo, duo and ensemble works.

Poshek, who heads up OCC's Music Theory Program, is a classical guitarist who has performed throughout the United States and Europe. He has appeared at Carnegie Recital Hall. Poshek has a B.A. in musical composition from MacAlester College in St. Paul, Minn., and B.A. and M.A. degrees in guitar from the Manhattan School of Music.

The Orange Coast Symphony will conclude its season on Saturday evening, May 8, in Robert B. Moore Theatre with a Baroque Concert. Curtain is scheduled for 8 p.m. Featured work will be J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto, No. 3.

OCC's Chorale will conclude its season with a concert titled "Cathedral Sounds" on Saturday, May 15, at 8 p.m. in the college's Arts Center. The Center contains extraordinary acoustics.
