The Peking Acrobats, a troupe of 26 of China's most gifted tumblers, contortionists, jugglers, cyclists, gymnasts and live musicians, will perform at Orange Coast College on Saturday evening, Feb. 8.

Curtain is set for 8 p.m. in OCC's Robert B. Moore Theatre.

The Peking Acrobats are bringing their 2,000-year-old tradition of acrobatics to Orange Coast College's Moore Theatre for the 15th time. The company began performing at OCC in 1986, and every performance has been sold out.

The 26-member company will receive live accompaniment from an exotic Chinese orchestra.

Hailing from the People's Republic of China, the nimble troupe traces the lineage of its art back to the Ch'in Dynasty (225-207 B.C.). The performers draw their inspiration in equal parts from ancient Chinese circus acts and contemporary street performers.

Since 1952, the elite company has left audiences worldwide spellbound. The Peking Acrobats are under the direction Hai Ken Tsi, whose family has turned out master acrobats for three generations. Troupe members are recruited at an early age -- some as young as five or six -- and immersed in the centuries-old circus arts.

The Peking Acrobats are particularly famous for their "Tower of Chairs," in which a young woman balances upon an ever-rising stack of chairs and then, finally, upon six small wooden blocks. Another crowd favorite is a bicyclist who circles the stage with 10 fellow performers draped to her bike. They form a symmetrical rolling human pyramid.

Advance reserved tickets for the concert, priced at $31, are on sale in OCC's Community Education Ticket Office, located adjacent to the college's library. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
