Wednesday, September 12, 2012

COSTA MESA -- Before the fans could even work up a sweat in the hot Wednesday afternoon sunshine, the Orange Coast College women's water polo team had its Orange Empire Conference opener with Saddleback well in hand.

Thanks to an 11-goal opening period, the Pirates cruised past the visiting Gauchos, 27-8.

Alyssa Thomas led the Pirates with seven goals, while Sierra Driessen, Audrey Hung and Brianna Salas each chipped four. Layla Jahanshai and Vivianne Mai each had three goals, while Kaitlyn Finney and Belen Cairo each contributed a goal each.

Coast led 11-0 after one period and 18-3 at the half and never looked back.

Goalies Anna Venturini and Cailend Robbins combined for seven saves in the win.

On Wednesday, the Pirates will return to the OCC pool and will host Santa Ana College, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
