Thirty-five years ago a grateful
Orange Coast College faculty and staff presented its founding president with a special
Dr. Basil H. Peterson had actually
retired 17 months earlier, on January 30, 1964. But, on Sunday, June 6, 1965, the
gift was finally bestowed.
"It took us well over a year to produce,"
recalls 83-year-old Thelma Harwood, one of the two primary architects of the project.
What Peterson received at his reception
that spring afternoon was a copy of a 300-page book, titled "Tumbleweeds to Roses:
A History of Orange Coast College." The book, which covered the history of the college
from its founding through 1963, was a collaborative effort, written jointly by 18
authors. The authors included faculty members, a former student, administrators,
a trustee, and a classified staff member.
