Coast To Coast

Following a campus review this week, on February 5 the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees will complete a first reading of the Follow-Up Report that will be submitted by the District and Orange Coast College to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). A second reading and approval is scheduled for February 19. The report must be submitted to ACCJC by March 15.

An accreditation team that included members from each of the district’s three colleges worked on the report that addresses the recommendations made by ACCJC when it placed the college on warning status last summer.

The team drafted responses to the five recommendations that deal with district-wide issues (four district recommendations and one commission recommendation).

The sixth recommendation, which deals with communication between OCC’s online instructors and students, was addressed primarily by the Online Advisory Board and is supported by the Accreditation Coordinating Committee (ACC), according to OCC Vice President of Instruction John Weispfenning. Jeremy Zitter, an English faculty member who edited much of last year’s full institutional Self Evaluation, drafted the response to the OCC recommendation.

The district-wide responses and the OCC response are available to the campus for review on the OCC Portal, under the “OCC Announcements” heading. Weispfenning invited faculty, administrators and staff members to provide specific feedback on the content of the drafts. Comments can be emailed to Weispfenning at or to ACC chair Georgie Monahan at

Weispfenning thanked faculty and staff “who have worked so hard to get us to this point. Your contributions are appreciated by your colleagues and will make a difference for the college.”
