CELEBRATING DIVERSITY: JANUARY 2014 CALENDAR BY THE INTERNATIONAL AND MULTICULTURAL COMMITTEE

This calendar is provided by the International and Multicultural Committee to celebrate diversity at Orange Coast College and in our community.

The following are celebrations of diversity for this month:

• 5 – Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday (Sikh)
• 6 – Epiphany or Twelfth Day (Christian)
• 6 – Three Kings’ Day (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic)
• 7 – The Nativity of Jesus Christ (Christian, Orthodox)
• 13 – Lohri (Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh)
• 14 – Eid Milad Un Nabi or Prophet’s Day (Islam, Muslim)
• 14 – Makar Sankranti (India)
• 16 – Tu b’Shvat or Tu B’Shevat (Jewish)
• 16 – Mahayana New Year (Buddhist)
• 18 to 25 – Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Christian)
• 19 – World Religion Day (Baha’i)
• 20 – Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (United States)
• 26 – Republic Day (India)
• 27 – World Holocaust Victims Remembrance Day
• 31 – Asian New Year – Year of the Horse
• 31 – Guru Har Rai’s Birthday (Sikh)
*Note: Many of the Jewish and Muslim celebrations begin at sundown.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in January, please note the 50th anniversary of his famous “We Have a Dream” speech.
