BLAICH ESTATE PRESENTS $250,000 GIFT TO OCC
John and Betty BlaichOrange Coast College has received a gift of nearly $250,000 from the estate of John and Betty Blaich, longtime Newport Beach residents, sailing enthusiasts and OCC supporters.

The couple spent nearly 50 years together until John’s death in 2003. Betty passed away in April 2010.
 
Both John and Betty participated in many educational opportunities offered at OCC, and when Betty’s parents moved to Newport from the East Coast, they would all attend evening lectures together.

OCC TO WELCOME HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS FRIDAY
Counselors from area high schools will visit campus on Friday, February 24th, for the annual High School Outreach Breakfast, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The morning program will include introductions from OCC counselors, Anna Katsuki and Denia Guillen, followed by welcoming remarks from Kristin Clark, Vice President of Student Services. ASOCC President Catherine Tran will offer a “Message from Students.”

SANTA ANA ARMY AIR BASE SETS 36TH REUNION SATURDAY
airbase photoNancy Robison, author of “Letters from My Brother,” will be the guest speaker at the 36th Annual Santa Ana Army Air Base Reunion at Orange Coast College on Saturday, February 25th, at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center. RITA SCHULTE SHINES A LIGHT AS OCC'S STRONG ROWER
Allison Paine and Rita SchulteNo one was more surprised than Rita Schulte, an accounting/fiscal specialist in OCC’s Business Office, when she received Orange Coast College’s Strong Rower Award.

The honor, passed from one OCC staff member to another, is a tradition that began in November 2000, when the late Barbara Wright, then Staff Development director, created the “spontaneous traveling award” for the person who makes “a simple, thoughtful gesture or special effort” to help another.

FACULTY, STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS DEADLINE WEDNESDAY
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011-12 Outstanding Coast Colleagues Awards Program.

Nominations may be submitted for Full-Time Faculty Member of the Year, Part-Time Faculty Member of the Year, and Classified Staff Member of the Year awards. Nomination deadline is Wednesday, February 29th. An election will be conducted during the month of March.

JUDI JORDAN EXHIBIT OPENS IN STUDENT GALLERY

Award-winning Orange Coast College photography student, Judi Jordan, is exhibiting her work in the Student Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Building Photo Lab, through March 12th. Jordan won the photography award in OCC’s 2011 Mass Appeal Student Art Exhibition. She is also the recipient of the Photography Department’s Virgillio (JR) Dubluis Memorial Photography Award.

THEATRE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES "AWESOME 80s" AUDITIONS
awesome 80s graphicThe Orange Coast College Theatre Department is recruiting character actors, singers, a break dancer and a “celebrity impersonator” to perform in the spring musical production of “The Awesome 80’s Prom.” Auditions will take place March 12, 13 and 14.

Actors interested in character roles will audition on Monday and Wednesday, March 12th and March 14th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Drama Lab.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS TODD ANGLIN HOME FOR CHILDREN
From the Heart of Charity Fundraiser, which is raising money for the Todd Anglin Home for Children, will be held Saturday, February 25th at the Neighborhood Community Center at 1845 Park Avenue in Costa Mesa. Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour with complimentary wine and champagne and an elegant dinner for $55. Entertainment will be provided by the Irish Celtic Gold Dancers.

On A Personal Note

Patty FarmerPatty Farmer, wife of OCC Security Coordinator John Farmer, has written a new book, “The Persian Room: An Oral History of New York’s Most Magical Night Spot,” that will be released on March 1st.

The book, two years in the making, has already received several five-star reviews on Amazon. The 222-page volume includes interviews with stars who performed at one of New York City’s most famous venues.

Cardio exercise reduces inflammation and abdominal fat. Engaging in cardiovascular exercise reduced levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and abdominal fat and increased fitness levels, while flexibility and balance exercises did not, according to a study in a recent issue of “Brain, Behavior and Immunity.”
