PIRATES TOP COMETS IN 10 INNINGS TO GIVE "ALTO" WIN NO. 500
Coach AltobelliCOSTA MESA -- The first celebratory mosh pit of players went to Manny Argomaniz for bringing home the game-winning run in the 10th inning for the Orange Coast College baseball team in Friday's 3-2 victory over Palomar.

The players then made their way over to head coach John Altobelli, who became just the 24th head coach in California Community College baseball history to pick up career win No. 500.

Coast Community College District announced its 2nd Annual Coast Launchpad Initiative, a creative contest that rewards innovations by employee teams to improve student success. Teams must submit applications for their projects by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 8th.

PRESIDENT'S DAY 5K WALK/RUN NETS $7,500
The OCC Athletic and Honors Alliance President’s Day 5K Run/Walk attracted 260 competitors on Monday, February 18th and generated $7,500. Proceeds will provide scholarships for OCC students and support student-athletes.

SPEECH TEAM TAKES 2ND AT CERRITOS, 5TH AT SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The OCC Speech, Debate & Theater Team just wrapped up a busy fortnight competing in two regional tournaments.

The Pirates defeated 15 other colleges and universities from around the region to take 2nd place at the at Tabor-Venitsky Invitational Tournament hosted at Cerritos College in Norwalk February 15-17.

WORK OF 38 ARTISTS FEATURED IN CALIFORNIA DRAWING
“California Drawing,” an exhibit by 38 artists who use the ancient discipline of drawing in a diversity of approaches, will run through March 14th in the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion. Co-curators are OCC art professor Tom Dowling and Arts Pavilion director Trevor Norris.

“Underage” by Ohm Phaniphiroj is on display in the Art Center Gallery. “Our First Year Together” by Christine Shank can be viewed in the Fine Arts Gallery. The Orange Coast College Symphony, faculty and Music Department alums will star in a concert version of Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies” on Saturday, March 2nd at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The musical tells the story of one-time Broadway darlings who reunite to live their glory days together.

THEATER STUDENTS WRITE, DIRECT ORIGINAL WORKS IN PLAY FESTIVAL
The Orange Coast College Repertory will present seven original short plays, including works written by OCC students. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 8, 9 and 10. Performances will be in the Drama Lab Studio Theatre. Recommended for mature audiences. Admission is free.

COAST CREW TO CELEBRATE DIAMOND JUBILEE MARCH 9
crew logoThe Orange Coast College Men's Crew will celebrate 60 years of a winning tradition with a Diamond Jubilee and Alumni Dinner on Saturday, March 9th from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the OCC Student Center.

For the first time, the crew will bring together Six Decades of Champion Oarsmen and Coxswains. Current and former crew members will share memories, catch up with one another and learn about the current program.

The Orange Coast College Chamber Singers will join the Long Beach Chorale and members of the Southern California Children’s Chorus to perform Carl Orff’s raucous “Carmina Burana” on Saturday, March 16th at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. More than 90 singers, two soloists, two pianists, and a team of percussionists bring to life one of the best-loved works of the 20th century.

Banff film shotOrange Coast College will host the “best of the best” from the 37th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival, Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m.

The BMFF World Tour features an international selection of films that present a wide range of outdoor adventures and portraits, including climbing, mountain expeditions, remote cultures and the world’s last great wild places.

LIBRARY STUDENT WORKSHOPS
The library provides open workshops for students to learn how to do research in the physical and virtual library. The students do not need to make a reservation, but can just drop in. These 60-minute workshops are held in the library’s Lecture Room (go right when you enter the library) Extra credit slips will be provided.
