CAMPUS PREPARES FOR ACCREDITATION VISIT MARCH 18-21

An accreditation review team will visit the OCC campus from March 18-21, and everyone on campus has been asked to prepare for the event – which only happens once every six years – by reading the “Pirates Treasure Map to a Successful Accreditation Visit.”

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR LAUNCHPAD INITIATIVE - DUE MARCH 15, 2013
Coast Community College District announced its 2nd Annual Coast Launchpad Initiative, a creative contest that rewards innovations by employee teams to improve student success. Teams must submit applications for their projects by the extended deadline of 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 15th.

Gabrielle Stanco
Gabrielle Stanco has joined the Institutional Effectiveness team as senior research analyst. Originally from Texas, she comes to OCC from Boston College where she was assistant research director for TIMSS, an international study of mathematics and science.

STUDENT EXHIBIT CAPTURES KOREAN WAR IN GRANDFATHER'S PHOTOS

A collection of his grandfather’s photos taken during the Korean War inspired OCC student Lawrence Swift to create an exhibit, “Forever Yours in Snapshots,” that is on display in the Student Gallery in the Fine Arts Photo Lab through March 12th.

OCC FILM GRAD WORKS ON ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING VISUAL EFFECTS FOR "LIFE OF PI"

OCC alum Christian Zeiler, who completed a Certificate of Achievement in OCC’s Film and Video Program in 2011, has racked up nearly a dozen film credits including work on the visual effects team that just won an Academy Award for the movie, “Life of Pi.”

OCC TO HOST "ENTREPRENEURSHIP OF ENTERTAINMENT"
Orange Coast College will host “The Entrepreneurship of Entertainment” on Friday, March 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The program is a motivational, educational, musical and dance event where students will have the opportunity to hear about the entertainment business first-hand.

THEATER STUDENTS WRITE, DIRECT ORIGINAL WORKS IN PLAY FESTIVAL
The Orange Coast College Repertory will present original short plays, including works written by OCC students on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 8, 9 and 10. Performances, at 7:30 p.m., will be in the Drama Lab Studio Theatre. The show is recommended for mature audiences. Admission is free.

Long Beach ChoraleThe Orange Coast College Chamber Singers will join the Long Beach Chorale and members of the Southern California Children’s Chorus to perform Carl Orff’s raucous “Carmina Burana” on Saturday, March 16th at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. More than 90 singers, two soloists, two pianists, and a team of percussionists bring to life one of the best-loved works of the 20th century.

FOTL TO HOST BANFF ADVENTURE FILMS MARCH 20
Banff film sceneOrange Coast College will host the “best of the best” from the 37th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival, Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m.

The BMFF World Tour features an international selection of films that present a wide range of outdoor adventures and portraits, including climbing, mountain expeditions, remote cultures and the world’s last great wild places.

LIBRARY STUDENT WORKSHOPS
The library provides open workshops for students to learn how to do research in the physical and virtual library. The students do not need to make a reservation, but can just drop in. These 60-minute workshops are held in the library’s Lecture Room (go right when you enter the library) Extra credit slips will be provided.

On A Personal Note

The campus is invited to attend a retirement party for Judy Lagerlof and Carolyn Thomas, staff members in Enrollment Services, on Friday, March 8th, in the Captain’s Table from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Jo Ann Merriam, who retired from Coast Community College District in December 2011, is the newest member of Western Carolina University, Continuing Education. “My husband, Alan, and I moved to N.C. and we LOVE IT!” Jo Ann reported. She brings years of experience on the staff of OCC’s Community Education Department under dean emeritus George Blanc.
