Coast To Coast

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
Thursday, March 06, 2014

Harry “Art” Taussig, who taught photography at OCC for 31 years until his retirement in 2003, has released his third solo guitar album for Tompkins Square Records. “The Diamond of Lost Alphabets” is now available on every digital service, worldwide. Listen to a track at https://soundcloud.com/tompkinssquare/cloudy-cloudy-is-the-stuff-of.

“It has a lot of my favorite gizmos: the idea of a ‘tone row’ stolen from Arnold Schoenberg; jumping from meter to meter, 4/4 to 7/4 to 9/4 to 3/4 borrowed from Stravinsky’s ‘Le Sacre du Printemps,’ and combining key signatures in unconventional ways inspired by Bartok. I hope this works the way science does: if you borrow from one person, it is plagiarism, but if you borrow from several, it is original research.”

Taussig appeared on Takoma’s “Contemporary Guitar Spring ‘67” comp alongside John Fahey and Max Ochs. His first album, “Fate Is Only Once,” was released in 1965 and reissued on Tompkins Square in 2006. Taussig played his first live show ever at South By Southwest festival in Austin, TX, last year.
