SPRING PLANT SALE CONTINUES ON FRIDAYS THROUGH MAY 4

Backyard gardeners will find a plentiful selection of vegetable seedlings and flowering pots at Orange Coast College’s spring plant sales on Fridays through May 4th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Horticulture Garden Nursery near the campus’ Adams Parking lot.

OCC HORTICULTURE CLUB CREATES GARDEN FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Orange Coast College’s Horticulture Club, with the help of nearly $2,000 from South Coast Plaza, has created a display garden, “A Therapeutic Garden for the Visually Impaired,” for South Coast Plaza’s 23rd Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show, which opens April 26th and runs through April 29th. This year the display gardens will focus on “healing gardens.”

COAST STUDENTS TO SCREEN 'OCC SHORTS' AT NB FILM FEST
occ shorts promoThe Newport Beach Film Festival will showcase the work of Orange Coast College film students on Sunday, April 29th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lido Theater, 3459 Via Lido, in Newport Beach.

The festival will run from April 26th through May 3rd at Triangle Square, Lido and Big Newport theaters. The event has grown to include more than 400 films from 50 different countries, and it attracts more than 50,000 filmgoers each year.

LIBRARY STUDENT WORKSHOPS
The library supports the college curriculum and provides instruction of library and information research skills that enable students to be successful in their college, career, and life.

The library is offering our second series of library student workshops on library and information research skills next week (see dates and times below). These open workshops allow students to drop in for the same training that we provide in our library lectures for classes. Extra credit slips are available if required by the faculty.

YOU'RE INVITED TO "THE AWESOME 80S PROM" MAY 3-12
awesome 80s graphicOrange Coast College’s Theatre Department will take audiences back to 1989 and the days of Ferris Bueller and “Pretty in Pink” with “The Awesome 80s Prom,” which runs from May 3-12 in the Drama Lab Theatre.

The cast of 25 students will be ready to dance–and compete–for Prom King and Queen, and the actors hope to include everyone in the fun. Chaperones will serve free punch and cookies to theatre patrons who arrive dressed for the party in prom attire.

OCC WIND ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM BROADWAY FAVORITES ON MAY 6
Dana Wheaton, Orange Coast College professor of music, will direct the OCC Wind Ensemble in its final concert of the year, “Broadway IV,” on Sunday, May 6th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The performance will include a selection of Broadway show tunes. OCC Beginning Instruments and OCC Intermediate Orchestra will also perform. DOYLE ARTS PAVILION ISSUES OPEN CALL FOR STUDENT ARTWORK
mass appeal flierThe Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion announced an “open call” for artwork submissions by Orange Coast College students for the student exhibit, Mass Appeal 2012, that will open May 9th through May 30th.

Students can drop off their best piece of artwork between 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 2nd, or Thursday, May 3rd, to be considered for the exhibit.

40 DANCERS WILL PERFORM IN COLORFUL SPECTACLE

A cast of 40 multicultural dancers will celebrate the colorful movements and rituals from dance around the world on Friday, May 18th, at 7:00 p.m. onstage at Orange Coast College's Robert B. Moore Theatre. Directed by OCC faculty member, Angelika Nemeth, this 60-minute concert includes dance and music selections from Africa, Egypt, Puerto Rico, Hawai'i, Tahiti, Korea, Scotland, ... and more.

OCC’s Speech, Debate, & Theater team earned the overall Silver Medal at the Phi Ro Pi National Tournament, held April 10-14 at Moraine Valley Community College in Schaumburg, IL. The team also captured silver medals in Individual Events Sweepstakes, and Debate Sweepstakes

STEADRY HONORED FOR VAST INFLUENCE, ACHIEVEMENT
Rick Steadry
Rick Steadry, who introduced thousands of OCC students to photography during the past 41 years, was honored at a retirement reception this past Saturday. Dozens of colleagues and students paid tribute to Steadry’s immense influence on the art of photography, OCC’s photography department, and student success in the field.

ARCHITECTURAL STUDENTS COMPETE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO'S DESIGN VILLAGE
architectural studentsA team of OCC architectural students traveled to San Luis Obispo to build a structure for Design Village Metamorphosis, an architectural competition hosted by Cal Poly.

The Metamorphosis theme is based on the increasing need for adaptable architecture and flexibility in design. Students create a design that has multiple functions and uses.

JOY JARS MAY TOY DRIVE

Jessica Joy Rees, Leon Skeie’s granddaughter who passed away Jan. 5th had a wish to send Joy Jars to every child fighting cancer which is 50,000 children. Joy Jars are about 7 inches high and have a 3 ½ inch opening and are stuffed with toys to bring a smile to a child’s face. swim with mike logoSwim with Mike is an annual swim-a-thon to raise money for the USC Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship fund. Started 31 years ago at USC, the fund now supports 116 college scholarships at 49 different schools. Over $ 796,000 in scholarships was awarded last year alone.
