Focus Day Set for This Friday
OCC’s Focus Day is scheduled for this Friday, August 28 from 9 a.m. until noon. The program will take place in the Science Hall, and will include an update on the state of the college and CEQA process. Faculty and staff will have an opportunity to welcome new faculty members, classified staff members and managers, as well as hear from Academic Senate and Union representatives.

OCC Says Farewell to Visual and Performing Arts Dean Joe Poshek
The College bids a fond farewell this month to longtime faculty member and administrator Joe Poshek. Poshek began teaching at Coast part time in 1984, and was hired full-time in 1998 to head up the Music Theory program. He was hired as dean of OCC’s Visual and Performing Arts Division seven years ago.

Dance Dept. to Host Pilates Guest Series from September to November
OCC’s dance department will host its ninth annual Pilates Guest Speaker Series from Sept. 9 to Nov. 18. The series of five lecture-activity workshops will be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the months from 1:30–3:30 p.m. in the College’s Art Center, Rooms 147 or 148, and admission for OCC students, faculty and staff is free. Pilates certificate alumni also are invited to attend for $10 per session. Lectures will be given in small intimate groups and each lecture is $20 for the general public. Attendees also can purchase all five lectures for $85.

Drawing Exhibition Opens Aug. 31
The Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion will host an exhibition titled “Applied Pressure” from August 31 until October 8. The exhibition is part of West Coast Drawing, a cohort of 25 Southern California artists working in drawing media. The group was created in 2003 to showcase the best and brightest in dry mediums, and works range from photorealism to total abstraction.

Captain’s Table Will Offer Lunch and Dinner Service During Fall Semester
Orange Coast College’s instructional on-campus restaurant, The Captain’s Table, kicks off its fall schedule on Sept. 17 with something new — a dinner service in addition to the restaurant’s traditional lunch service.

LIBRARY STUDENT WORKSHOPS
The library provides open workshops for students to learn how to do research in the physical and virtual library. Students do not need to make a reservation, but can just drop in. The 60-minute workshops are held in the Library’s Lecture Room (go right when you enter the library) and extra credit slips will be provided.

Coast Colleges Chancellor Farrell recaps the District’s Summer Appreciation Picnic, which was held on August 18. The Chancellor grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for employees, and the District’s Employee of the Year was announced.

OCC In the News
The Daily Pilot featured a family with a special connection to Orange Coast College on July 31 — Bill and Cathy Turner once lived at OCC in married student housing while Bill went to school here in 1949, and all four of their children have attended Coast. The family celebrated the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 8.
