OCC WELCOMES 18,000-PLUS STUDENTS TO CAMPUS

An estimated 18,398 students flocked to campus for the opening of Orange Coast College’s Fall 2012 semester. Due to budget cuts, the college offered fewer sections – 1,599 compared to 1,720 last year. A total of 66,631 seats were available to students this fall, compared to 73,275 a year ago. However, instructors were encouraged to let additional students petition to enroll in classes if they could be accommodated. Final enrollment figures will not be available until a later date.

SEPTEMBER 7 FOCUS DAY SETS COURSE FOR PIRATES AT SEA

The campus will kick off the Fall Semester on Friday, September 7th, when faculty and staff gather for Focus Day meetings. Faculty and staff will have an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and meet four new managers and 15 new full-time faculty members.

CAMPUS WELCOMES NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF INSTRUCTION
John Weispfenning, Ph.D.Orange Coast College has named John Weispfenning, Ph.D., as Vice President of Instruction.

Dr. Weispfenning joins the OCC leadership team from Santiago Canyon College, where he has served as Dean of Library, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences since 2007. He supervised nearly 150 employees, administered budgets of almost $9 million, and oversaw 10 academic departments, including Athletics and its nine sports.

MADJID NIROUMAND NAMED DEAN OF ENROLLMENT SERVICES
Madjid Niroumand
Madjid Niroumand, director of Orange Coast College's International Center, and Interim Associate Dean of Student Support Services, is OCC’s new Dean of Enrollment Services.

The 41-year-old Irvine resident took over the reins of the International Student Center in 2005. Under his leadership, international enrollment Increased to approximately 700 from more than 60 countries.

TREVOR NORRIS TAKES NEW DOYLE ARTS PAVILION DIRECTOR
Trevor Norris, a part-time fine arts instructor at Orange Coast College, has been selected as director of the college’s Doyle Arts Pavilion.

Norris brings 10 years’ experience as gallery manager for the Helen Lindhurst Fine Arts Gallery at USC, where he served from 1998 to 2008. He earned a Master of Fine Arts at University of California, Santa Barbara, and is a graduate of the Central School of Art in London, England.

DISTRICT NAMES NEW BOARD SECRETARY
Julie Frazier-Mathews will begin her new role as the Secretary of the Board for the Coast Community College District on August 30th. She brings more than 15 years of experience of executive level support in administrative services, personnel management, legislative and policy analysis, and communications. Most recently, she has worked as the executive assistant to the Mayor for the City of San Bernardino.

HOT FOOD TEAM TAKES 2ND PLACE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

The OCC Culinary Arts Hot Food Team earned a gold medal and a second place finish at the American Culinary Federation Team Championship held in Orlando, Florida, in July. The students represented the Western Region and also won the state championship last year. Coast was among four teams to compete for the national title.

PIRATE CREW ROWS TO VICTORY IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Coast Crew rowed to win two national titles this July during a two-day regatta held on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia, the site of the 1966 Olympic games.

OCC SELECTED FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

Rose Ann Kings, professor of architecture, will travel to Costa Rica for 10 days this January to participate in Renewable Energy for International Development, a program designed to help create new study abroad programs at community and technical colleges.

Tom Selzer
Tom Selzer, general manager of OCC’s Instructional Food Service Program, has been named Orange Coast College’s 2011-2012 Manager of the Year by the Coast District Management Association. Tom has directed Food Services since 2000.

CONSTITUTION DAY DEBATE TACKES OBAMACARE RULING
EastmancherminskyTwo Constitutional scholars will visit OCC on Wednesday, September 19th, to speak on Obamacare and the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the law, especially the role and the ruling of Chief Justice Roberts. The 90-minute program will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

A variety of classes for the community will be offered this fall by Orange Coast College Community Education. Returning are popular classes in wine appreciation, blacksmithing and cooking, along with new offerings in cloud computing, creating an online business and bridge basics. ADAPTED KINESIOLOGY PROGRAM RECRUITS STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
Orientation workshops will be held Friday, August 31st, and Wednesday, September 5th, for students interested in volunteering in OCC’s Adapted Kinesiology Program. The sessions will take place on the half hour from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday, and from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday in Room 117 in the Student Health Center.

HONORS ALLIANCE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO OCC HONORS OPPORTUNITIES
The student leaders of the newly-formed OCC Honors Alliance hosted an Honors Open last week for more than 400 students who responded to an invitation to explore their honors options at OCC. Guests were provided with several PowerPoint presentations by the officers and board members of each group as well as printed literature and applications.

OCC GRAD WINS $175,000 EDUCATOR FELLOWSHIP
Stephanie Kinkel
Stephanie Kinkel, an Orange Coast College graduate, is among 34 educators selected to receive the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship, which provides $175,000 worth of mentoring and professional development to each recipient over the next five years. The fellowship is awarded to promising college graduates and fledgling professionals who have left lucrative careers to become science and math teachers.

Dr. Bernard Luskin
Dr. Bernard Luskin, former president of Orange Coast College, has been chosen President Elect for the Media Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association. Luskin is presently professor of media psychology and family therapy and senior provost and CEO for Touro University Worldwide.
