NEW FINANCIAL AID DIRECTOR “WORKED HIS WAY THROUGH THE RANKS”
Vincent Ngo, OCC’s newly appointed Financial Aid Director, began his Coast career 13 years ago as a student working part-time in the Financial Aid Office. “I worked my way through the ranks to the position that I hold today,” Ngo said. “I am very happy for this opportunity, but I’ll celebrate later. There is lots to do in Financial Aid, so I am going get down to business first and celebrate my accomplishment later.”

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER EXTENDS HOURS TO SATURDAYS
The Student Success Center is now open Saturdays! Thanks to Associated Students of Orange Coast College, the Student Success Center is able to offer tutoring services to students on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Center offers drop-in tutoring in math, English/writing, accounting, computer science, world languages, social science courses and more. Study groups are also available and can be requested by students or faculty. Workshops, including a Study Skills series, are offered on a weekly basis.

CCCD ASKS EMPLOYEES TO COMPLETE SURVEY BY FRIDAY
The Board of Trustees is asking all Coast District employees to contribute to its biennial evaluation. It is the first time the District has included all employees in this survey, which has previously been a self-evaluation only. “We are most interested in your views of the work of the Board so that we might learn from you what we do well and how we might improve. All responses remain anonymous,” according to a District email to employees.

66 COLLEGES TO JOIN OCC’S TRANSFER DAY SEPTEMBER 30
Students will have an opportunity to meet representatives from 66 colleges and universities at Orange Coast College's annual Transfer Day on Monday, September 30th. Admissions officers from the University of California and California State University campuses will attend, as well as representatives from private four-year colleges and out-of-state universities. The fair will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 1:00 p.m. in the campus quad. Admission is free; the public is invited to attend.

OCC TO HOST 10TH ANNUAL CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 29
There won’t be a dull moment at the 10th Annual Orange County Children’s Book Festival, which will take over Orange Coast College’s campus on Sunday, September 29th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free for the day-long literary event designed to encourage reading by children of all ages.

OCC SLATES VET NET ALLY TRAINING FOR FACULTY AND STAFF ON SEPTEMBER 27
OCC Student Services will host a half-day Vet Net Ally Training on Friday, September 27th, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Student Center Lounge. Marshall Thomas, director of Veterans Services at California State University, Los Angeles, will lead the workshop, which is sponsored by the California Community Colleges Mental Health Grant.

RADICAL REELS THRILLS OUTDOOR SPORTS FANS OCTOBER 2
Orange Coast College will screen the 2013 Radical Reels Tour, high-adrenaline outdoor sport films from the world-famous Banff Film Festival, on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Advance tickets are on sale for $10 at the OCC Bursar's Office and at REI Stores in Tustin and Huntington Beach. Admission for OCC students is $5. Admission at the door will be $12. The event is sponsored by OCC Friends of the Library and all proceeds will benefit the OCC Library.

NEW STEINWAY TO STAR AT OCC CONCERT ON OCTOBER 5
Orange Coast College’s spanking new 9-foot Steinway concert piano will take center stage on Saturday, October 5th, in a special concert that celebrates a recent $4.8 million renovation to the Music Department classrooms and facilities. The event, which includes a dessert reception in the music classrooms patio following the program, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre.

SCIENCE NIGHT COMMITTEE SEEKS JUDGES, VOLUNTEERS FOR OCTOBER 25TH EVENT
OCC’s Community Science Night, scheduled for Friday, October 25th, is recruiting volunteers to judge the Student Decoration Contest. The Science Night Committee would like to include representatives from faculty, staff and administration in the competition. The commitment isn’t difficult. It involves being available that night for about 30 minutes to walk around the rooms that are decorated.

LIBRARY SLATES OPEN WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS
The Orange Coast College Library is offering a series of open workshops to help students with research in the physical and virtual library. Students do not need to make a reservation, but can just drop in. These 60-minute workshops are held in the Library’s Lecture Room, located at the Library entrance. Extra credit slips will be provided.
