Students in the Orange Coast College Dental Assisting Program will provide low-cost dental exams and cleaning to volunteers this spring, according to Joy Myers, program chair.

Most volunteer patients are students referred by the Student Health Center, but the low-cost program is also open to staff, faculty and their family members, Myers said.

Dental Assisting Program students accept patients to do their clinic requirements. A dentist performs complete exams, students take digital full-mouth x-rays, and a dental hygienist does teeth cleaning. "We do tooth whitening and pit and fissure sealants also," Myers said. "These services are offered at a very reduced fee."

Patients needing more complex dental work are referred to other low-cost providers. Anyone interested in volunteering as a patient should email Myers at
