June 1, 2020 Update

Dear Students,

The tragic events of the past week and this weekend have prompted me to send you this message...a message I write with the heaviest of hearts for the death of George Floyd, and the indescribable pain that his family and our communities are experiencing.

This is a time that prompts us to strengthen our resolve against racism, hate and discrimination and an unequivocal focus on social justice. We, at Orange Coast College, reflect the diversity of our country through the lived experiences of our students and members of our campus community. And as such, we recognize our collective responsibility in creating an inclusive environment for our students and campus community to learn and thrive. Our values reflect this commitment through action—our work towards creating a culture of meaningful engagement for all. May we continue to sharpen our focus and work on eliminating inequities in our communities, classrooms and educational spaces.

Our humanity connects us in ways that allow us to stand united for our students and against injustice. May we continue to care for each other and our communities during this very uncertain time in our country.

Angelica L. Suarez, Ph.D.
