Membership Criteria
OPS Logo Revised 2.PNGOmega Psi Sigma offers membership to any Orange Coast College student who meets the minimum GPA and coursework criteria.  Permanent membership (with transcript notation and honors graduation privileges) also requires a total of 25 hours of service to the honor society, which may be accomplished through leadership, volunteerism, or other types of participation. 

 

Provisional Membership is available only to students with fewer than 12 units of OCC coursework completed and the applicant has:

  • Graduated high school in 2012 and earned a final minimum high school cumulative GPA (grades 9-12) of 3.0
  • Enrolled in at least six units of letter-graded coursework at Orange Coast College, including at least one political science or other qualifying course (see list at bottom of this page)
  • Paid the College Service Charge
  • Submitted an application with a dues payment of $20.00 (will be applied to Initial Membership fee once qualified)

Initial Membership status is available to applicants with at least 12 units of OCC coursework completed and the applicant has:

  • Enrolled in at least six units of letter-graded coursework at Orange Coast College
  • Maintained good standing status with the Dean of Student Services' Office and paid the College Service Charge
  • Completed or has in progress two or more political sicnece and/or other qualifying courses with letter grades (see list at bottom of page); at least half of the qualifying coursework must be in progress or have been completed at OCC
  • Earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 in all completed college coursework (at least 12 units) used to qualify the applicant for membership*
  • Earned a minimum GPA of 3.25 among all political science and/or other qualifying courses completed
  • Submitted an application with a dues payment of $50.00 (applicants may deduct $20.00 for Provisional membership dues paid previously)

*No grades earned from any institution other than OCC, or five or more years prior to submitting the application will be considered unless requested by the applicant and approved by the OPS chapter advisor. However, if any coursework is taken into consideration, the accomplanying cumulative GPA will also be taken into account.

 

Continuing Membership status will be granted if the applicant has:

  • Enrolled in at least six units of coursework at Orange Coast College
  • Maintained good standing with the Dean of Student Service' Office and paid the College Service Charge
  • Completed a minimum of six units of letter-graded coursework within the Coast Community College District in the previous semester, earning a minimum semester GPA of at least 3.0**
  • Completed at least two political science and/or other qualifying courses with a minimum GPA of 3.25 among them (see list at bottom of this page)
  • Earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 since Initial  or last renewal of membership

**A member who has previously been granted Continuing status will receive a semester's "grace" with the payment of renewal dues (membership remains in force temporarily) if the semester GPA falls below 3.0 but the cumulative GPA remains at or above 3.00.  There shall be no two consecutive grace periods. In the event that a student takes all classes credit/no credit (pass/fail), then that semester will count as the grace period provided s/he is already in Continuing Membership status.  Mebers in a grace period are not eligible to apply for chapter scholarships or run for elected office.

 

Permanent Membership status will be granted if the applicant meets all of the following criteria. S/he must have:

  • Enrolled in at least one class at Orange Coast College; OR has graduated and/or has been admitted to a transfer school
  • Maintained good standing with the Dean of Student Services' Office and paid any required College Service Charges
  • Completed at least six units of letter-graded coursework within the Coast Community College District in the previous/last semester at OCC with a minimum semester GPA of 3.0
  • Completed at least three political science and/or other qualifying courses with a minimum GPA of 3.25 among them (see list at bottom of page)
  • Earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 since last renewal of membership
  • Completed a minimum of 25 hours of service to or sponsored by the Omega Psi Sigma chapter
  • Submitted an application with a final dues payment of $30.00
