In this stage, you will research majors and explore careers using a variety of resources, many of which are offered below. Consider important elements such as career outlooks, salary information, job descriptions and — of course — how well careers align with your distinct personality.

Using your results from the Eureka and/or CA Career Zone self-assessments, complete the Major/Career Research Worksheet to guide your exploration and research.

Programs at OCC

  • Academic Programs at OCC

  • Career Education Programs at OCC showcases 50 robust and exciting career education programs that deliver the education, technical training and work-based learning experiences necessary to qualify for and excel in the well-paying career of your choice in two years or fewer.

What Can I Do with This Major? provides lists of career areas and types of employers that hire students within each major, as well as strategies to help you be a more marketable candidate. TIP: Once you click on a major, scroll to the bottom of the page to see related professional associations, occupation outlook information, related resources and employment opportunities.

California CareerZone allows you to browse through California’s 15 leading industry sectors/career pathways.

  • Under the Explore Industry Sectors section, click on Start Exploring.

  • Within each sector, you can sort the list of related occupations by salary range and job zone (educational preparation required).

  • Once you select a specific occupation, you can read about the job duties, related values and Holland interests, similar occupations and job titles, as well as job outlook, preparation required, and salary information.
  • Bonus: Register a username and password under Your Career Hub to access live listings of open positions related to that occupation.

     

O*NET OnLine is the nation’s primary source of occupational information, offering detailed and up-to-date descriptions on U.S. occupations.

  • Search by keywords under Occupation Search.

  • Select Browse under Find Occupations to explore jobs by bright outlooks, green economy, STEM, and various job families.

  • Select Focus under Advanced Search to explore jobs by a specific skill, tool, technology, value, etc.

Vocational Biographies offer an in-depth look at hundreds of careers and real career biographies from real people. The site’s Career Stories contain interesting interviews, school experiences and interests, work history through current jobs and lifestyles, photos from on the job, and up-to-date career data.

Salary Surfer helps students and their families make important decisions about investing time and money in a college education by providing comparative estimates on the potential wages to be earned two and five years after receiving a certificate or degree in certain academic disciplines.

  • Under the Let’s Get Started! section, select a program of study from the drop-down menu to see specific programs and their earnings potential.

  • Click on the + symbol next to a program to see what California’s community colleges offer for that particular program.
