The maritime industry not only offers an exciting and dynamic career path, it also gives individuals a chance to explore and travel across the globe. Students who complete Orange Coast College's professional mariner program are eligible for their Merchant Mariner's Document, a certificate for safety training, and will have the skills to begin a career as a deckhand sailor, ordinary seaman or wiper. Some examples of private and commercial vessels include large private yachts, charter yachts, cruise ships, passenger ferries, whale watching and diving boats, supply vessels, work boats, tug boats, and commercial shipping vessels.

Professional Mariner - Level 1
This program includes career path identification and job search preparation in the maritime industry, seamanship, marine safety, boat handling, navigation and boat maintenance. Most courses include hands-on practical exercises, and students are require to meet minimum swimming requirements. Upon completion of the program students will be prepared for employment as a deckhand on private yachts or commercial vessels, with the capability for advancement.
Advanced Level
This program is intended for students who have completed prior course requirements and are qualified for advance courses.
