Welding Technology

Welding technology is the application of the art and science of joining materials. Careers opportunities for welding technologists are vast and diverse, and include everything from developing miniature electronic devices to building sophisticated space projects. These highly skilled members of technological teams apply practical working knowledge of welding processes, welding metallurgy and welding code standards in solving programs of welding design and production.

Orange Coast College's welding program is licensed to certify welders to code standards, and is open to both men and women.

Certificates of Achievement

Welding Technology

This program is designed for those who desire advanced knowledge of welding for employment as welding technicians, inspectors, engineers and supervisors. Many OCC welding courses are transferable and can be used by students who are interested in California State University engineering degrees, or the welding engineering degree program at Ohio State University.

Graduates of OCC's welding program have a better chance for the job of their choice when they have the technical background that this certificate provides. Students who complete the welding program will have the necessary skills and training to take the welding qualification text for certification, which may be required for employment. Working craftsmen will be able to improve or develop additional proficiencies required for professional growth or advancement in their current employment. All qualification training and tests are prescribed and follow the guide of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) codes requirements.

Certificates of Specialization

Weld Testing

The Weld Testing Certificates of Specialization will be awarded upon successful completion of a proficiency test for each identified level within a category of welding (i.e. SMAW. FCAW. GTAW. GMAW. Orbital Welding or Pipe. See below). The indicated weld testing class must be repeated for each type of certificate received. Higher levels of certification will potentially lead to better paying jobs within the industry.

Skill Certificates

Basic Welding (SMAW)

  • Basic Welding (SMAW)
  • Intermediate Welding (SMAW)
  • Advanced Welding (SMAW)
  • Advanced I Welding (FCAW)
  • Advanced II Welding (FCAW)
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
  • Orbital Welding
  • Pipe
