The Psychology Department offers many popular classes at Orange Coast College that introduce students to the discipline of psychology.
Many students begin to explore psychology by taking Introductory Psychology (100) which introduces students to the broad interests of psychology. As well, the department has classes which address understanding personality (Psych 220), human development (Psych 130 and 140), abnormal behavior (Psych 255 and 150), the biological basis of behavior (Psych 250), learning (Psych 270), human sexuality (Psych 165 and 175), personal growth and adjustment (Psych 110, 200, and 215), how the individual is influenced by groups (Psych 260), exposure to the counseling and the mental health field (Psych 125, 235, and 245), as well as opportunities to learn about the research methods and tools used in psychology (Psych 160, 280, and 185).
To serve students better, the Psychology Department has:
- The Associate in Arts in Psychology for Transfer degree to help students transfer to the California State University System with a major in psychology.
- The Mental Health Worker Career Certificate for students who want to earn a Certificate of Achievement to be part of a mental health team, serving emotionally, cognitively, and intellectually challenged clients in community settings that provide therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation, and recovery services.
- An active Psychology Club, as well as a psychology honorary, to increase interests, knowledge, and friendships that revolve around the field of psychology.
