The Psychology Department offers many popular classes at Orange Coast College that introduce students to the discipline of psychology. Many students begin to explore psychology by taking Introductory Psychology (100) which introduces students to the broad interests of psychology. As well, the department has classes which address understanding personality, human development, abnormal behavior, the biological basis of behavior, learning, human sexuality, personal growth and adjustment, how the individual is influenced by groups, exposure to the counseling and the mental health field, as well as opportunities to learn about the research methods and tools used in psychology.
To serve students better, the Psychology Department has:
- The Associate in Arts in Psychology for Transfer degree to help students transfer to the California State University System with a major in psychology.
- The Mental Health Worker Career Certificate for students who want to earn a Certificate of Achievement to be part of a mental health team, serving emotionally, cognitively, and intellectually challenged clients in community settings that provide therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation, and recovery services.
- An active Psychology Club, as well as a psychology honorary, to increase interests, knowledge, and friendships that revolve around the field of psychology.
