Karen Ellis received her early dance training in her birthplace of upstate New York, and later she studied at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and at the San Francisco Ballet School as an apprentice. Karen received her BS in Ballet from Indiana University Bloomington, where she studied with Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. After graduating, she danced professionally with the Ballet Theatre of Boston, and later attended UC Irvine where she earned her MFA in Dance. Karen has taught dance and Pilates at several colleges including Orange Coast College, Indiana University, Irvine Valley College, Long Beach City College, UC Irvine, Phillips Academy Andover, Bucknell in Pennsylvania and Chatauqua Institute in New York. Intrigued by the profound benefits of Pilates, and fascinated by the mechanics of the body, overcoming injury and creating balance, Karen continues to study and has earned three certifications in various styles of Pilates and is certified in yoga. In 2002, she opened her own Pilates studio, Prana Pilates in Costa Mesa. Karen is honored to help new teachers that graduate from the OCC Pilates Certificate Program to develop their talents and gain confidence in the workplace.
