In 1969, at age 18 and as senior photographer for Surfer Magazine, Art met up with Bunker Spreckels standing beachside at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore. It would mark the start of a friendly yet rancorous working relationship. And as a very loose collaborative association, it would neither come into fantastic focus nor totally devolve away from frame, until a trip to South Africa in 1975, when Art, commissioned by Bunker, having already trailed the man across several continents found himself keeping dangerous company; only now aware he’d been lured into the lion’s den ... as Bunker, on a tear thru Durban, was tagged by the locals as being “too wild for the game park.”
The result of eight years of documenting these such exotic exploits and other adventures, approximately some 35 years ago, is an amassed collection of storied photographs— mostly unseen and unpublished—save for some 60 printed in the hardcover coffee-table book Bunker Spreckels: Surfing’s Divine Prince of Decadence 1949-1977 (Taschen, 2007).

Over a 40-year career, Art has seen his vast body of surfing images and beach portraits celebrated in mainstream publications as diverse as Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, and Playboy.

Jonathan Fletcher has been involved in photography for more than 25 years. He holds an MFA from the Art Institute of Boston and a BA from UC Santa Barbara. He has worked in both commercial and fine arts photography. His personal work, which is held in collections throughout the country, explores aspects of time and perspective using self-built pinhole cameras. In 2006 he served as technical advisor to The Great Picture project, a massive effort to turn an F-18 jet hanger at El Toro Marine Corps base into the worlds largest pinhole camera. The resulting 31ft x 111ft image is listed with the Guinness Book as the world's largest single photograph. He also has a passion for all of the antiquated "alternative" processes used in the late 19th and early 20th century. Jonathan has taught photography for the past 10 years at The School of Photography at Orange Coast College.

John is a second-generation photographer living in the suburbs of Southern California. He attended Orange Coast College and California State University, Fullerton, but much of his training in photography came from the family business which started the year that he was born. Since 1996 he has been teaching Photography at Orange Coast College and is also currently serving as the director of the Departments Photographic Gallery. He has been exhibiting his work locally and internationally since 1986 and he is included in photographic collections at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Maison Europeene de la Photographie in Paris. As he puts it, "My work always seems to have something to do with time. Whether it is a long exposure that conjures a dream, or a sequence of images that explores memory, photography’s description of time is fundamental to my work."
