Course Descriptions
Transfer Courses
All courses numbered 100 or higher are transferable to the California State Universities (CSU). Courses that are transferable to the University of California are designated 'UC.' Some of these courses have limits on the amount of credit that is granted. See the UC Transferable Course List available in the Counseling Center or Transfer Center for these limitations. Courses that are non-credit or not AA degree applicable are designated with the letter 'N' preceding the course number. Identification of courses that have been accepted into the California Articulation Number (CAN) system appears after the course title.

Art A102- Contemporary Art Hist (3)
A survey of late modernism and contemporary art movements in American and international culture. Recommended for all visual arts majors. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A103- History of Asian Art (3)
A survey of the painting, sculpture, architecture, and minor arts of China, Korea, and Japan, emphasizing their relationship to the philosophy and religions of Asia. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A107- Introduction to Art (3)
An appreciation of art methods and materials presented in historical and contemporary context. Designed to develop both observational and hands-on experience in the creation of art emphasizing fundamental art ideas, terminology, methodology, and the relationship of art to society. Topics will include drawing, painting, sculpture, film arts, printmaking, and architecture. Gallery/museum visits are required. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Art A108- Women in Art (3)
Women artists and the image of women in art from the Paleolithic period to the present day. Art criticisms, the feminist art movement, and the status of contemporary women artists. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A110- Color & Design: 2D (3)
A basic course in the visual organization of the elements and principles of design as fundamental concepts in visual problem solving, composition, and color theory. Emphasis will be on the underlying nonobjective and abstract structure of visual art. Required for art majors and certificate programs. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A111- Color & Design: 3D (3)
Basic problems in 3-D design, using plaster, metal, wood, plastics and assorted materials. PREREQUISITE: Art A110. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A116- Furniture Making/Design (4)
The student will design, construct, and manufacture furniture and related products. Same as Construction A116. Students completing Art A116 may not receive credit for Construction A116. This course may be taken four times. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A118- Product Illustration 1 (2)
For the beginner through semi-professional levels of drawing skill. Principles of line, shade-shadow, highlight reflection, color, materials and graphic presentation. Sketching and rendering using various media and papers. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A119- Product Illustration 2 (2)
Continuation of Product Illustration 1 to include more detailed renderings. May be taken for grades or on a May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. PREREQUISITE: Art A118. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A120- Beginning Drawing (3)
This course will emphasize the perceptual and technical skill of drawing by use of observational and drawing methodologies. The student will render natural and artificial forms as simple and complex volumes using a variety of media on paper. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A120H- Honors Beginning Drawing (3)
This course will emphasize the perceptual and technical skill of drawing by use of observational and drawing methodologies. The student will render natural and artificial forms as simple and complex volumes using a variety of media on paper. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A121- Life Drawing (3)
Figure drawing from the nude model. The study of volumes, foreshortening, structure, anatomy and composition of the human form. Required of art majors. This course may be taken four times. ADVISORY: Art A120. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A122- Human Anat for Artists (3)
A drawing and study course using the human figure as a model. Emphasis will be on human anatomy and how it relates to drawing the figure. This course is recommended for art majors. ADVISORY: Art A120. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A125- Perspective Drawing (3)
Drawing of three dimensional objects using perspective as a tool. Emphasis on fundamentals and different procedures used. Emphasizes methods which are directly related to the artist's needs including short cuts. Recommended for art majors and certificate programs. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A130- Painting 1 (3)
Students will develop the basic craft of painting landscape, still life, and the figure using selected media. Students will apply and practice a creative approach to painting to achieve an understanding of color, space, form, and composition. PREREQUISITE: Art A110 and A120. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A131- Painting 2 (3)
Continuation of Art 130 with emphasis on personal expression. Alternate painting mediums introduced. This course may be taken 3 times

Art A141- Sculpture 1 (3)
Exploration of sculptural material and concepts, technical experiences may include modeling, casting and fabricating with sculptural media. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A142- Life Sculpture (3)
Exploration of figurative sculpture from the model emphasizing structure and expressive potential. Technical experiences may include armature building, clay modeling and hand-building, kiln firing, and the application of glazes and patinas. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. This course may be taken four times. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A143- Story Illustration Tech (3)
Principles of Illustration applied to various drawing and painting media. Imaginative application of theories and techniques that produce original illustrations with clear communication of concept. This course may be taken four times. PREREQUISITE: Art A121. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A145- Exhibition Design (3)
An opportunity to solve design problems related to the OCC gallery and museum exhibitions. Studies include crowd flow and the dynamics of thematic design based on various criteria. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A147- Jewelry 1 (3)
The application of the basic concepts of design related to two and three dimensional crafts. Projects in hand wrought jewelry fabrication (sterling silver, copper, and brass), copper enameling and small three dimensional wood construction. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A150- Ceramics 1 (3)
An introduction to ceramic materials and various techniques associated with and necessary to work in ceramics. Exploration in Historical and traditional pottery form as well as trends in contemporary ceramics. Various glazing and firing techniques will include Stoneware, Porcelain and Earthenware. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A151- Ceramics 2 (3)
Students will be introduced to the Potters Wheel and to various wheel thrown techniques. Students will be familiarized with functional Ceramics, studio organization and advanced technical language. The study of selected historic and contemporary information will be covered. This course may be taken three times. PREREQUISITE: Art A150. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A170- Printmaking 1 (3)
Introduction to contemporary practices and aesthetics of printmaking. Formal elements and techniques using a broad range of materials and processes including: relief (linocut, woodcut), intaglio (drypoint, etching, collograph), lithography, and monoprinting. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A171- Printmaking 2 (3)
Further development of formal, technical, and conceptual skills in printmaking. Emphasis on color printing and combinations of print techniques as well as development of personal handling of the media. Rotating concentration of specific print processes such as intaglio, relief and planographic. This course may be taken three times. PREREQUISITE: Art A170. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A175- Screen Process Printing (3)
Theory and practice of screen process printing; construction of the screen, techniques of photo stencil making, color registration, and printing on various surfaces pertinent to fine art and commercial application. Emphasis on execution of original designs and understanding of contemporary applications. This course may be taken two times. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A180- Professional Studies (1)
An exploration and identification of areas of employment and professional activity in art making. Presentation techniques including a portfolio of art work, personal artistic statement, and critiques and reports reflecting an understanding of the information presented through guest lecturers, films and field trips. Recommended for all Visual Arts majors. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A202- Intro Contemporary Art Theory (3)
An in-depth theory and philosophic examination of contemporary art issues and movements to be presented in a group seminar environment to include lecture, slides, discussion, field trips to galleries and artist studios, as well as individual research and/or artwork. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Advisory: Art A102. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A220- Figure Composition (3)
An advanced drawing and painting course. The primary focus is pictorial composition. Creative solutions to the posed model situations are emphasized. Design of the picture plane using traditional compositional devices will be taught. Examples from old master art reproductions and their art history will be integral part of the class. This course may be taken four times. PREREQUISITE: Art A121. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A235- Experimental Painting (3)
Exploration and presentation of painting using contemporary mixed media and materials in non-traditional contexts for the purpose of developing individual expressive directions. Experimentation with various painting supports and non-traditional media. This course may be taken four times. ADVISORY: Art A110. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A236- Life Painting (3)
A course in figure painting using the live model. Various painting media and analysis of light, shade, and color will be covered. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. This course may be taken four times. PREREQUISITE: Art A121. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A241- Sculpture 2 (3)
Advanced study in the creative use of techniques and materials of sculpture with an emphasis on stone carving, mold making and casting, additive sculpture, and assemblage. This course may be taken three times. PREREQUISITE: Art A141. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A245- Exhibition Design (3)
Continued work in gallery organization and design with emphasis in the use of the environment as a means of communication. Assignment of specific responsibility for specific areas of installation of professional and amateur exhibitions, including jury selection, gallery representative in fund raising roles. Students will "shadow" the gallery director in overall organization of exhibits. This course may be taken three times. PREREQUISITE: Art A145. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A247- Jewelry 2 (3)
Further development of hand wrought jewelry fabrication techniques to include explorations in casting, hollow form construction, linking devices and lapidary. Emphasis will also be on individual student's field of interest. This course may be taken three times. PREREQUISITE: Art A147. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Art A263- Painting in Watercolor (3)
Materials, methods, composition, and color for still life and landscape painting. This course may be taken four times. ADVISORY: Art A110. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A269- Cartooning 1 (3)
A basic course in cartooning for students interested in learning how to cartoon without any previous formal art training. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Art A270- Cartooning 2 (3)
A continuation of Cartooning 1 with an emphasis on developing skills, story idea interpretation, and a professional approach to cartooning.

Art A286- Book Arts (2)
Experiments in traditional and non-traditional bookbinding in creating a book as an art object. This course may be taken four times. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
