COACHES

Greetings from Head Coach Larry Moore!

Coach Larry Moore is in his 24th season as a college crew coach and in his 15th year  as a rowing coach at OCC.  He coached the Frosh/Novice crews at Coast from 1977 through 1981 and again from 2000 to 2002.  His 1980 Frosh 8 won the IRA national championship.  He was the Men's Head Coach in 1982 and 1983 and has again led the Pirates since the fall of 2002.  Coach Moore attended OCC from 1969 thru 1971 and rowed for Coach Dave Grant.  Transferring to Cornell University in the fall of 1971, Larry rowed for the "Big Red" and graduated with a B. A. in European History in 1973.  Upon returning to the West Coast, he attended UC Irvine and received his M.S.A. in Business and Higher Education.  He resides with his wife Judy and three children Max (19), Sara Lee (18) and Alex (18) in Rancho Santa Margarita.

2007 - 2008

The 2008 racing season is upon us.  The crew has completed winter training and is looking forward to the spring.  With boathouse renovation under way, the crew has shifted its training base to the Newport Aquatic Center for the remainder of the season.  We should have about 2 1/2 eights of returning Sophomores this year to fill out the Varsity.  I expect them to be quite successful.  Pat Gleason continues to do a great job with the Novice program.  He is coaching the novices for the sixth year.   Last year's Novice squad was exceptional with impressive showings at the San Diego Crew Classic, Newport Regatta, WIRA, an easy victory in the heats at the ECAC NIRC and tight racing at the IRA Championships in New Jersey.  This year's novices had a good showing in the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival and are eager for the spring season to begin.  Danny Johnson and Matthew Chapman, former Coast oarsmen, will be assisting again this year. Danny graduated from Cal and Matt from Rutgers.  Robbie, our rigger, keeps the equipment in top shape.

We are always excited to hear from new athletes interested in joining Crew.   We are here to assist you in reaching your rowing and collegiate goals.

Pat Gleason is beginning his sixth season as the assistant  coach. He is primarily in charge of the novice (1st year) rowers. Gleason returns to the coaching ranks after acting as the head coach during the 1985-86 season.

A member of the Coast rowing teams during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, Gleason went on to row at the University of Washington the following two seasons where they were 2nd in the nation in 1983 and won the National Championship in 1984. An outstanding athlete, Gleason coached pole vault at Corona del Mar HS (1980) and Edison HS (1981) before heading on to Washington.
