COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team took the lead in the second period on Wednesday and never looked back as the Pirates topped visiting Santa Ana College, 10-7, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
Trevor McGhie led the Pirates with five goals, while Kyle Sullivan added three goals and an assist and Gavin Wright added five assists to the scoresheet. Chad Naughton contributed a goal and two assists, while Gerit Hill chipped in a goal and an assist.
For the Dons, Duncan Wilson led the offense with three goals and two assists, while Nick Beavers and Nicholas Todd each had a goal and an assist. Goalie Wesley Kobel stopped 16 shots for the Dons.
Jose Cueto stopped seven shots in the first half for the Pirates, while Josiah Vander Kooy notched three saves in the second half.
After both teams scored four goals in the first period, Coast took the lead for good with three unanswered goals in the second period to grab a 7-4 advantage.
Goals by Beavers and Wilson cut the OCC lead down to 7-6 but the Pirates would answer back with a goal by McGhie to make it 8-6.
Again, Santa Ana got to within a goal early in the fourth period before back-to-back tallies by Hill and McGhie sealed the deal for the Pirates.
