Orange Coast College Green Coast Day Will Include Demo of Bike Paths on Campus

Orange Coast College will host its 13th annual Green Coast Day event on Thursday, April 19 with exhibits by environmentally conscientious businesses, community organizations and students from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the College's Main Quad. Organizations like Zero Motorcycles, Plastic Pollution Coalition and Citizen & Darling will participate in the event, handing out information about eco-friendly products, services and volunteer opportunities.

This year's Green Coast Day will feature a demonstration of a "Core Campus Loop" for bicyclists and skateboarders demarcated on the perimeter of campus.

"The Bike and Skate master plan was approved last year, and it included a number of improvements to the campus to make it better for bicyclists, skateboarders, and even pedestrians," says biology instructor and Green Coast Day organizer Marc Perkins. "Right now, it's unclear where you should go as a bicyclist, and there's a lot of pathways that are too narrow and get into pinch points that are unsafe. What we're going to do is create a 'Core Campus Loop' which is a set of pathways that are all fairly wide, and which are going to help direct people around the core of campus. Every building on campus is within 100 yards of this loop."

Costa Mesa bike shop Two Wheels One Planet will be on hand at the event to do on-the-spot bike repairs.

Green Coast Day also will correspond with the College's annual recognition of Garrison Fellows, named for the late marine science professor Tom Garrison, founding director of OCC's Honors Program. Students selected by honors faculty members as Garrison Fellows are recognized for their combined outstanding academic success and commitment to the College and community through extracurricular activity and leadership, particularly as it relates to the environment.

A celebratory breakfast will be held for Garrison Fellows and their families from 8–9:30 a.m. in the Student Center Lounge, followed by a ceremony in the Robert B. Moore Theatre from 9:35–11 a.m. during which nominating faculty will present students with certificates and crystal awards.
