Orange Coast College will host its 12th annual Green Coast Day event on Wednesday, April 19 with exhibits by environmentally conscientious businesses, community organizations and students from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the College’s Main Quad.
Organizations like BikeUCI, the OCC Food Riders and Kozm/The Underswell will participate in the event, handing out information about eco-friendly products, services and volunteer opportunities.
“Green Coast Day is the premier annual event on the OCC campus to educate our students regarding the environment, sustainability and green business,” says John Fawcett, Co-founder of Green Coast Day.
Green Coast Day will correspond with the College’s annual recognition of Garrison Fellows, named for the late marine science professor Tom Garrison, founding director of OCC’s Honors Program. Students selected by honors faculty members as Garrison Fellows are recognized for their combined outstanding academic success and commitment to the College and community through extracurricular activity and leadership, particularly as it relates to the environment.
A celebratory breakfast will be held for Garrison Fellows and their families from 9 - 10:30 a.m. in the Student Center Lounge, followed by a ceremony in the Robert B. Moore Theatre at 11 a.m. during which nominating faculty will present students with certificates and crystal awards. OCC has invited alumni Felicia Vargo-Johnson as its guest speaker at the event. Vargo-Johnson was an OCC student when she co-founded Green Coast Day 12 years ago, and she later attended UCLA and was a Garrison Fellow.
This year’s Green Coast Day theme is Environmental Engagement, and Vargo-Johnson’s talk will highlight her experiences in environmental engagement, as well as the important of plastic pollution, particularly in the ocean.
