World Dance Celebration Will Feature Afro-Haitian Drumming, Folklorico

Orange Coast College will hold its 9th annual World Dance Celebration on Friday, May 19 at 8 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre.

This year's showcase will feature music and dance from countries all over the world, including Egypt, Hawaii, Iran, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Tahiti and more. The performance also will include live Afro-Haitian and Polynesian drumming, and performances by guest artists Marru Mikaelian and the Tupua Drummers, Alessandro Tanasache (Romania violinist), Ben Woods (Flamenco guitarist) and Ballet Folklorico Raices de Mexico, OC.

"This is an opportunity for students to experience dance performance, and to promote styles of dance from around the world," says OCC Dance instructor Angelika Nemeth. "An event like this connects and bridges cultures."

There will be two showings of the 60-minute concert — one at 11 a.m. that is free to elementary, middle and high school students, and the evening performance. The cast includes renowned Coast dance faculty, members of the College's World Dance Ensemble, and guest artists.
