OCC Celebrates Kwanzaa with Creator of Pan-African holiday, Dr. Maulana Karenga

Orange Coast College's UMOJA program has invited activist and scholar Dr. Maulana Karenga to speak at a Kwanzaa celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 12:30 p.m. in the College's Multicultural Center, located in the Global Engagement Center (see map). Dr. Karenga is the creator of Kwanzaa and the writer of the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles), and currently is a professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach.

Dr. Karenga is the author of authoritative books on the subject, including "Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture," and he has received numerous awards for this work, which has spanned more than five decades. He currently serves as the national chairman of The Organization Us, a cultural and social change organization that he founded in the 1960s, and the executive director of the Kawaida Institute of Pan-African Studies, Los Angeles.

Dr. Karenga also serves on the executive council of the national organizing committee for the Million Man March/Day of Absence.
