Orange Coast College is kicking off the holiday season with its annual Poinsettia Sale. The popular event — now in its 42nd year — will take place on Friday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the College's greenhouses.
OCC's horticulture department produces thousands of beautiful poinsettias each holiday season in their greenhouses, which are equipped with the latest technology in order to ensure ideal growing conditions for the fickle plant. This year the department is offering multiple varieties of the holiday favorite, including traditional royal red, creamy white, Winter Rose (with red ruffled bracts), Monet, and Ice Punch. The poinsettias are presented in 4½- and 6½-inch pots, 12-inch bowls, hanging baskets and centerpieces, and as an added bonus the most popular 6½-inch pots have three plants instead of the usual one, making them florist grade poinsettias.
Coast's Poinsettia Sale is well-known for the quality of its plants and their affordability. The annual fundraiser draws a large local turnout, with many members in the community returning year after year and plants selling out quickly.
"Every year we love to see the wonderful people who come here to support us. The volunteers and community members are fantastic," says horticulture instructor Lori Pullman
The horticulture greenhouses are located just off Adams Avenue, adjacent to the College's Technology Center. Students will be on hand to package the plants and answer any questions, and all proceeds from the sale will fund future student projects and scholarships.
Prices range from $6 to $50. Prospective buyers are invited to visit the College's horticulture website at www.orangecoastcollege.edu/horticulture
