OCC Guardian Scholars Selected to Travel Abroad for Humanitarian Work

Three OCC Guardian Scholars were selected from a highly competitive national  pool of candidates for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel abroad this summer to do global humanitarian projects with an organization called Export Hope. The students are now fundraising $500 each to cover a small portion of the expenses for their trips.

Export Hope funds all travel expenses and the cost of participating in the various programs the Scholars have selected but they are responsible for fundraising $500 each to help support miscellaneous expenses while in their host countries. "Every little bit helps—both practically and in showing OCC's Scholars just how many of us are rooting for them behind the scenes," says Program Coordinator Gabrielle Ridley.

Here are what the scholars have to say about their trips:

jerzo castellanos"Hello my name is Jerzo Castellanos and I am a third year OCC student and Guardian Scholar. This summer I am planning to study Jaguars in Costa Rica and I'm very much looking forward to being a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity. I appreciate any support I can get in order to work towards this goal. Note from Gabrielle: Jerzo is planning on obtaining a doctorate in veterinary medicine and his conservation efforts in Tortugero National Park will be invaluable in the pursuit of this goal.

chris huerta"Hi my name is Christopher Huerta, I'm an OCC guardian scholar that has been selected by Export Hope to travel and volunteer in Thailand this summer 2020. This opportunity will have me take care of and engage with elephants that have been relieved from the tourism industry. As I work with these gentle giants I'll also be put to work in humanitarian efforts with the locals such as teaching English to school children and engaging in an incredible culture vastly different than my own. I am fundraising $500 to support this venture and spread awareness for this incredible organization giving me and others once in the lifetime opportunities like this. Any donation no matter how small is greatly appreciated!" Note from Gabrielle: Chris is pursuing a career in Health and Human services to help others the way he has been helped here at OCC and plans to transfer to University in the fall.

christopher gonzalez"Hello! My name is Christopher Gonzalez and I'm traveling to Peru this summer 2020 to help archeologists excavate new sites that have been discovered. This is my first time traveling anywhere across the world and I am very excited to have been chosen to make a difference somewhere else in the world. I am fundraising a total of $500 by February 15. Anything that you can help me with will be greatly appreciated because the money will be used to support me while I am over in Peru. Thank you so much for your precious time and for anything you can help me with." Note from Gabrielle: Christopher is a film student who has applied to transfer to both USC and UCLA, among other highly competitive programs.
