Student Leadership and Governance
432-5730

The ASOCC Leadership and Governance program is the student governing body of Orange Coast College. It is comprised of elected and appointed leaders along with numerous staff members. The student executive board includes the Student Senators,  President of the SGOCC, Vice-President of Diplomatic Affairs, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Fiscal Affairs, Vice President of College Life,  InterClub Council President and Officers and Fiscal Affairs Committee Members. Campus-wide elections for the Senator positions take place every spring semester. The President of the SGOCC, Vice-President of Diplomatic Affairs, Vice President of Communications,  Vice President of College Life,  InterClub Council President are appointed to office by the incoming Student Senators. The Vice President of Fiscal Affair is appointed by the Fiscal Affairs Council, by its own membership. Students who are not interested in serving on any of these positions can still be involved in the leadership program through the many different staff positions.

The program also provides students with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills through coursework and hands-on experience. Students participating in ASOCC make decisions affecting the campus through service on college-wide committees; plan and execute events; work along side administrators, faculty, staff, and peers; and study the art of leadership through courses such as Interdisciplinary Studies 150AD and 140 (not currently offered). Scholarship and student participation is the cornerstone of the ASOCC. So, come and join the experience by enrolling in the student leadership courses or visiting our office in the Student Center.

Fiscal Affairs Council
432-5730

The Fiscal Affairs Council oversees the fiscal affairs of the Associated Students:  Opportunities to participate in this committee are available in the ASOCC office each fall.  The Fiscal Affairs Council is chaired by the student holding the position Vice President of Fiscal Affairs. The Fiscal Affairs Council creates an operating budget for the Associated Students for the upcoming academic year and recommends it to the Student Senators, which has the responsibility of adopting a budget in its last meeting of each year. Included in this budget is the contingency fund, money which has been set aside for unanticipated expenses. The Fiscal Affairs Council also hears requests for funds from the contingency and makes recommendations to the Student Senators on a weekly basis. Funds available to the ASOCC come from a number of sources including profits from the Bookstore Recycling Center, in addition to interest earned on investments and revenue from the College Service Charge.

College Life: Clubs on Campus

Where can I get information about clubs on campus?
Stop by the ASOCC Office located in the Student Center. The office is open Mondays 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 p.m. There are well over 60 students clubs and organizations that are open to all registered OCC students who have paid the College Service Charge. These clubs sponsor special activities, fund-raising events, community service events, and speakers.

How can I start my own club?
You can pick up a copy of the club handbook and talk to anyone in the ASOCC Office to find out how to start a club. It's really easy to do! The club handbook will also answer any questions you may have about putting on an activity, publicizing events, financial questions, and services that are available to each club.

Are there any rooms available for an official meeting?
Club meeting rooms are scheduled through the class scheduling technician located in the Aministration Building. Rooms will not be assigned until after the 2nd week of the semester to ensure enough rooms for classes.

On-Campus Publicity
OCC is a limited public forum. This means that posting is limited to campus-related and sponsored events except on a few bulletin boards. If your club, department, or organization is planning an event, its success will depend on proper publicity. A variety of options are available to you. Please refer to the club handbook or the ASOCC office for more information.

Public Posting
Any member of the public may post a notice on the public posting boards located at the Cove, and the Classrooms and Lab Breezeway. One notice may be posted on each board. It must include a contact name and telephone number or address. Anything written in a foreign language must include an English translation. You are limited to an 11 inch by 17 inch poster. Items will be removed after two weeks.

Campus Posting
There are 7 glass-enclosed bulletin boards located at the entrances to campus. These are available for posting campus-approved and related activities only. The above formatting rules apply and you must have your poster stamped "approved" at the ASOCC Office.

When and where can I use banners, sign boards, balloons, and stakes?
This manner of posting is limited to advertising campus-approved events. Contact the ASOCC Office for information about these techniques, reservations for equipment, and supplies.

How can I get the word out to the faculty and staff?
The Coast to Coast is published weekly for all faculty and staff. If you wish to have a notice about an approved activity included, contact Mary Rhoda at the Community Relations Office in the Administration Building. You can also place a notice in faculty and staff mailboxes if it has been approved by the ASOCC Office. There are approximately 1300 boxes. You are responsible for the cost of producing the notices.

Speech & Debate Team
Literature and Language Building
432-5580, 432-5780

How much time does it take?
That's up to you. It depends on how much involvement you desire and the number of units you take. The class, Speech 150, is designed to accommodate a range of student interest levels/competitive goals from entry level, 1 unit (curiosity, just want to taste the experience, get your feet wet) to experienced competitor, 4 units (goal is national competition, multiple speeches). In addition to the class, students spend time in workshops, coaching sessions, and at tournaments.

Don't I need experience?
No. Competitive experience or a public speaking class are helpful, but not necessary. The Speech 150 class, workshops, coaching, and dedication can get you started at the novice or beginning level. As your skills increase, your competitive level will be adjusted.

Do I have to compete in debate?
No. Debate is one of sixteen different types of speech team competition. Each type of competition has intrinsic rewards. All of the events focus on improving your communication skills.
