What Is CalFresh?


CalFresh is California's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that awards individuals who are eligible with monthly grocery benefits to help supplement their food budget and buy food. Benefit allotment ranges depending on household size, income, and expenses.

CalFresh awards eligible students up to $250 a month for food.



CALFRESH STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND EXEMPTIONS


  1. US Citizenship or Permanent Legal Residence
  2. Income at or under chart based on household
  3. Between ages of 18 and 49 and enrolled at least half-time
  4. Fulfill at least ONE student exemption below:
    1. Receive CalGrant A/B
    2. A parent with a dependent child under 6 (or 12 without available childcare services)
    3. Works 20 hours per week, or an average of 80 hours per month
    4. Enrolled in one or more programs: EOP, EOPS/CARE, DSPS, Guardian Scholars, etc.
** Student Temporary Exemptions:
  1. Approved for a federal or state work study program,
  2. OR have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $0.

A CALFRESH HOUSEHOLD CONSIST OF

  • An individual living alone or with others who purchases and prepares food separately.
  • A group of individuals related or unrelated residing together who purchase or prepare food together.
  • If an individual is under 22 years of age and lives with parents, this is considered one household and they must apply together.
